Cardboard Art: Laurence Vallières Creates a Sculpture Live at the URBAN NATION Museum

The Canadian artist specializes in cardboard boxes as a material and invites interested museum visitors to witness the creation of one of her artworks as it happens – bit by bit.
As a place of encounter and exchange, the URBAN NATION MUSEUM FOR URBAN CONTEMPORARY ART combines various positions and sub-genres of contemporary urban art. Besides the public art projects One Wall and Community Wall interested parties will now also be able to experience the creation of an artwork inside the museum. Renowned for her huge – mostly animal – sculptures, the Canadian artist will be creating one of her artworks from cardboard between March 20 and 26 – before the eyes of the museum’s visitors. Vallières is an activist and many of her works thus thematize social injustices and advocate animal welfare. The work to be created at the URBAN NATION Museum will also feature global political references: Vallières will only be using cardboard from various countries with multilingual imprints.

Born in Québec city in 1986, Laurence Vallières has come to be known for the creation of large-scale sculptures from cardboard. After her fine art degree and an artist’s residency in Russia, she appropriated a street art influence in her work. By using cardboard, material that she finds in abundance in the street, she can create her large works – mostly about human relationships, communication and political topics – on the spot in every part of the world she goes. Her works have already been shown in many exhibitions and at various festivals such as POW! WOW! Hawaii 2018, Juxtapoz Clubhouse Miami 2017, the Moniker Art Fair 2017 and Burning Man 2016, to name but a few.
