International Museum Day at URBAN NATION

On International Museum Day, museums around the world draw attention to their role in society – an important concern for our URBAN NATION Museum for Urban Contemporary Art too. The museum not only offers a platform for internationally renowned artists, but also consciously focuses on local participation with participatory projects. Museums are important extracurricular places of learning for children and adults alike. Street art, graffiti and urban art in particular are art forms that provide low-threshold access to complex topics. We are presenting our current exhibition “Love Letters to the City” in short tours and a drop-in workshop on street culture.

The exhibition pays homage to urban spaces and encourages reflection on the role of art in shaping our collective urban experience. The exhibition examines the transformative potential of art in public spaces and explores the methods and motivations behind such works, as well as their social impact. By going beyond the confines of the museum, the exhibition encourages visitors to re-evaluate public space, engage with public space and discover their connection to the city. The narratives embedded in the urban landscape are accessible to those who are ready to perceive them.

Dylan Mitro, fellow of our Martha Cooper Artist Residency 2025, offers the drop-in workshop “Photo Mapping and Our History in the City: Zine Making”. In this workshop, he will show participants how to continue the legacy of legendary street art photographer, Martha Cooper, by creating their own documentation of our city. Together we will create a collective zine that will be donated to the Martha Cooper Library at URBAN NATION at the end. Using a scanner, our smartphones, markers and craft materials, and a standard printer, we will end up printing a zine with contributions from all participants.
