Gary Baseman is a multi-talented American artist from Los Angeles, California. A painter, animator, curator, toy designer as well as illustrator and movie producer he also is the creator of Emmy and BAFTA award-winning animation series ‘Teacher’s Pet’. His fine art works have been displayed all round the world and has also been featured as part of the opening of the URBAN NATION Museum in 2017.
Influenced by cartoons, MAD Magazine and Disneyland, Baseman, who studied communications and graduated magna cum laude from UCLA, working as an illustrator developed a very unique visual sense and style. Wanting to explore the beauty of the bitter sweetness of life, Baseman’s work is characterized by figures with huge eyes, often resembling cats or other animals, depicted in an eerie surrounding. With his work he is looking to blur the lines between fine and commercial art, which is why he creates products and shows for the mass market but also exhibits in galleries and sells to art collectors.
