Kenny Scharf is an American painter, sculptor and performance artist born in 1958 in Los Angeles. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and participated in the interdisciplinary East Village art scene during the 1980s alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Fascinated by television and modern design in post-World-War-II Southern California, his works often consist of pop culture icons and caricatures of middle-class Americans in apocalyptic science fiction settings. ‘One very important and guiding principle to my work, is to reach out beyond the elitist boundaries of fine art and connect to popular culture through my art’, Scharf describes his personal ambition. His art was exhibited in countless shows worldwide and is part of several public collections.
