Layqa Nuna Yawar, better known as Lunar New Year, is the visual artwork of Lenny Correa, an originally Ecuadorian migrant, artist, muralist, organizer, curator and agitator based in Newark, New Jersey. His work is featured as a part of the opening of URBAN NATION Museum in 2017.
Lunar New Year’s mural artwork developed out of a traditional visual arts education, a practice of street art interventions and independent self-organized principles, greatly impacted by his immigrant experience and his multicultural identity. He migrated from Ecuador to the US at an early age and today aims to reflect and amplify silenced voices by using the power of his art in public spaces. Beyond his artist practice he also works as a curator, hosts mural making workshops and educational lectures. Describing his artwork, Luna New Year says that he is ‘using the power of monumental art and representational painting in public space in order to create safe spaces for imagination and identity protection’ and a better, brighter future.
