Biography / Lucy McLauchlan

Lucy McLauchlan is a multi-talented artist from Birmingham, England, skilled in photography, videography, animation and painting. She paints monochromatic murals for which she uses permanent materials and mixed media like marker pens and Indian ink and due to her one-take philosophy, has developed an immediately recognizable style. Her work can be found on her collaboration with URBAN NATION on Project M/2 in 2014.

What makes Mclauchlan’s work so very special is that she combines historical concepts with a modern graphic feel. Influenced by Art Deco, Psychedelia, Naturalism and Contemporary Female Figurative work, her leitmotifs are faces and birds that interact with each other to reveal one another’s subconscious inner workings. These very naturalistically dominated designs often contrast the rough and brutal structures they were painted on, therefore developing an expressive dynamic. Her decorative, soothing and stimulating murals, which she creates re-using old paint pots and other studio detritus, can be considered an extension of her anti-consumerist believes.
