Biography / Niels Meulman

Niels Meulman, an artist of which many know as simply ‘Shoe’ is a visual artist and graffiti legend. Born in 1967 and raised in Amsterdam, he single-handily transformed the graffiti movement when he established the ‘Calligraffiti’ movement. Niels ‘Shoe’ Muelman’s works are featured in the URBAN NATION 2018 exhibition, ‘UN-DERSTAND The Power of Art as a Social Architect’.

Niels began tagging at the tender young age of 13 under the tag, ‘Shoe’ and by the time he was 18, he had become a graffiti legend. Being the pioneering artist that he was, in the 1980’s, Niels then went on to work with New York graffiti legends such as Dondi, Rammellzee and Keith Haring. It was at this point where he then progressed onto taking his abstract expressionism from the streets to the galleries.

Niels takes the aspects and the abilities of traditional paint on canvas to the very edge of its mediums, but this same boldness found in his experimentation is also found in other mediums from installations to even poetry.
