Biography / Sean Mahan

Sean Mahan is a social realist figurative painter and muralist from northern Florida who mainly works with graphite and acrylic washes on wood and canvas. His both sweet and sorrowful depictions of childlike wonder are often paired with his interest in exploring structures of power and control. His work is featured as part of the opening of the URBAN NATION MUSEUM in 2017.

After studying illustration at Savanna College of Art and Design, Mahan pursued art further and as illustration elevated into fine arts he got interest in the idea of removing its advertising background to see what was left after disassembling it. Heavily influenced by punk music he then translated the authenticity of voice he saw in it into his visual art making. Painting mostly children is his way of connecting to something that has not been distorted by our environment yet. Thinking back to his childhood and the level of comfort he felt back then, he also includes household items from the Being 50’s and 60’s into his works.
