Paper bag over the head: Street artist Christian Böhmer creates enigmatic wall murals at the outdoor wall galleria in the Bülowstraße quarter

Who is hiding behind the paper bag, what face, which emotion? Christian Böhmer, the artist of the now finalized six-by-four-meter-tall wand mural on Frobenstraße, Berlin-Schöneberg, won’t reveal this to us. Observers are to come up with their own ideas and solve the puzzle utilizing their own range of experiences. But one thing we do know: The head covered by a paper bag can be interpreted as a desire for anonymity in the big city. But doesn’t this desire bring the woman portrayed in a cool pose out of balance and out of a grounded position? Isn’t this person, who appears to be dissolving in colorful, geometric shapes, being pulled into the abyss?

The piece was created within the scope of the project series Community Wall, which has been executed by URBAN NATION MUSEUM FOR URBAN CONTEMPORARY ART under the artistic leadership of Director Yasha Young since the beginning of the year. Along Bülowstraße and its side streets, an outdoor gallery has formed that welcomes exciting discoveries of urban art and in which local and international artists leave behind many puzzles. Thanks to Christian Böhmer, now an additional colorful wall has been added on Frobenstraße.

About Christian Böhmer

The roots of the self-taught street-artist, portraitist and illustrator born in 1984 can be traced back to the graffiti scene of the late 90s. Still today, these influences can be recognized in the dynamic, colorful, and partly experimental style of his works. At the core of his current creative period are portrait drawing, where he often foregoes the portrayal of faces and in their place depicts a paper bag as a bearer of a message. His “paper-bag heads” as an abstract means for uniformed masking partly allows the individuals to become an undefinable mass. Despite all of the self-expression across the social media channels of the world, essentially, we are all the same. Böhmer was a participant at numerous festivals and his works often appear in reference books on urban art. He lives and works as a freelance artist in Cologne.

About Community Walls

In a smaller format than the facades of the famous One-Wall series initiated by URBAN NATION, the Community Walls around Bülowstraße invite people to look over the shoulders of artists during the emergence of a work of art. This allows a person to obtain vivid insight into the design process. The individual works and artistic positions are supposed to enrich the street’s image and to also stimulate contemplation and dwelling even outside of the museum.
