URBAN NATION kicks off the “Martha Cooper Library Presents” event series with a talk featuring MadC and Martha Cooper, moderated by Nika Kramer.

Street artist MadC will present her new book, “From Street to Canvas”, which will be added to the Martha Cooper Library collection.  She will be joined by Nika Kramer and Martha Cooper to talk about the conditions of production of photography, graffiti and street art, the meaning of making books and the special challenges for women in the male-dominated scene.

Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has been capturing subcultural and vernacular art and architecture in urban spaces for over 40 years. Martha Cooper’s 1984 book Subway Art (published by the photographer and Henry Chalfant) is affectionately called “The Bible” by graffiti artists today. She is considered the most important chronicler of graffiti and street art. Martha Cooper’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and published in numerous magazines.

MadC was born Claudia Walde in Germany in 1980. In 25 years of constant involvement with graffiti and street art, she has evolved from a teenager starting out with a spray can to one of the world’s top street artists. She holds degrees in graphic design from two universities and has published three books on street art. Her canvases are shown in solo and group exhibitions around the world. But she has also always had a special, immediate connection to the street itself, which is evident in the many colorful murals she has painted around the world.

The event will be moderated by photographer Nika Kramer, Martha Cooper’s protégé and collaborator, who has worked with her on 4 books and is a contributor to Urban Nation, Wynwood Walls, and Red Bull, among others.

After the discussion, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and have books signed, which can be purchased on site.
