Community Wall by Jim Avignon: Spektefeld

As part of the Stadtraum!Plus program, a site-specific mural by artist Jim Avignon was created in Berlin’s Falkenhagener Feld neighborhood in collaboration with the foundation Berliner Leben and Gewobag. The work was realized through participatory collaboration with young people from the Outreach youthclub. Under the guiding theme “Good Neighborhood,” the project combines artistic production with socio-spatial engagement and views public space as a place of shared negotiation, visibility, and participation. The involvement of the young people underscores the project’s intergenerational and educational objectives: The mural can be interpreted not only as art but also as a social process in which aesthetic practice, participation, and local identity intertwine.

The mural itself draws on key elements of Jim Avignon’s visual language: a two-dimensional style influenced by comics and pop culture, vibrant colors, simplified figures, and a composition rich in narrative density. A multifaceted panorama unfolds across the entire wall surface, featuring human and hybrid figures, animals, everyday objects, and urban elements, intertwining scenes of coexistence, movement, and encounters. At first glance, the imagery appears playful and lighthearted, but upon closer inspection, it reveals a complex social choreography: movement, communication, neighborhood life, and public space emerge as intertwined elements of everyday urban life.

The work’s unique quality lies precisely in the combination of artistic authorship and participatory creation. The Community Wall serves as an interface between art, urbanity, and social space: as a place that fosters a sense of identity in the neighborhood, as a platform for aesthetic experience in everyday life, and as a visible sign that cultural participation in public space can be collectively produced. In this way, the mural becomes far more than a design intervention—it is a social portrait of the neighborhood that not only addresses the concept of community but also embodies it in its very creation.
