ONE WALL by Jim Avignon – The Ice Cream Man

With “The Ice Cream Man,” Berlin-based artist Jim Avignon has created a new ONE WALL in Falkenhagener Feld. A colorful, surreal world unfolds on the facade at Kraepelinweg 3. At the center stands an oversized ice cream figure, surrounded by numerous human, animal, and hybrid characters that interact with one another and bring the entire facade to life.

Avignon combines his distinctive visual language—influenced by Pop Art and comics—with an open and humorous narrative style. Clear contours, vibrant colors, and surprising combinations of everyday motifs create an image that is immediately accessible while also opening up numerous possibilities for personal interpretation. The facade itself becomes a stage: figures play music, play soccer, encounter one another, or look out from the picture at their urban surroundings.

“The Ice Cream Man” is part of URBAN NATION’s ONE-WALL program and fits within the theme of “Good Neighborhood.” The new work combines Avignon’s playful visual style with the question of what makes a neighborhood vibrant: encounters, diversity, communication, and the shared experience of public space.

What makes this project special is the combination of internationally recognized urban art and local participation through the Berliner Leben Foundation’s Stadtraum!Plus program. Residents were able to contribute their ideas about what makes a good neighborhood to the artistic process. As a result, the wall becomes not only a work of art for the neighborhood, but also a visible expression of the neighborhood itself.

With “The Ice Cream Man,” Jim Avignon continues his exploration of urban life: humorous, direct, and full of visual details. The mural invites viewers to stop, discover individual characters and stories, and ask themselves what a good neighborhood might look like.
