Biography / ANA BARRIGA

Ana Barriga is a Spanish artist, who lives and works in Madrid. Barriga’s pieces reflect her belief that a hidden life exists within us all, where our desires, dreams, hopes and frustrations live. Her figures become couriers who convey encrypted riddles and messages from the ‘other world’. In a throw-back to constructed ‘artificial’ forms of representational art, we are left to question our bias.

Ana Barriga uses existing objects, mostly ceramic flea market finds, to assemble and construct new narratives. Using an expressive and confident painting technique, she imparts new characteristics to otherwise kitschy souvenirs, challenging the limits of her own imagination as well as that of the viewer.

Her piece “MI PEQUEÑA FLOR” is in the museum’s current exhibition “Talking…& Other Banana Skins“.
