Calvin Ma, who lives and works in San Francisco, studied sculpture and industrial art. In his art he uses the form of the action figure and the superhero to face his personal problems and anxieties. Ma’s ceramics have been shown in galleries and museums around the world. His work can be found on his collaboration with URBAN NATION on Project M/14 in 2019.
Ma has difficulties in social environments. The company of strangers, crowds, and even meetings with friends and family make him nervous and impair his ability to function socially. Already as a child he was reserved and anxious, so he turned to toys and avoided his peers. He spent his childhood playing with his favorite heroes or villains to create stories and adventures that completely captured him. As an artist, it was only logical for Ma to translate this childlike feeling of exploration and storytelling into his work.
