Sociologist Maria Pichel started her artistic career in the field of illustration in 2013 (workshops and courses in Barcelona). According to her sociological background, she focuses on social issues (such as feminism, gender violence, environmental protection, sex work and underpaid domestic workers) and their translation into artistic-graphic languages. Her preferred visual art techniques are gouache, ink or color painting, which Pichel also combines with printmaking and digital art.
About the project
The search for a place to call home becomes a major problem for immigrants moving to Berlin. Through various interviews and focus groups, Pichel aims to collect stories and experiences that have in common the creation of a safe and homely environment in the migration process as part of the project “Leaving hme, living home”. These collected stories will be translated into illustrations for a comic book that show both sides: What people have built up here so that they feel at home, but also what events are happening around them so that they cannot feel at home, safe or secure. In addition to the comic book, the end result will be a large collage map showing different ways of living in and experiencing Berlin.
