Simon Menner is a German photographer and archival artist, who lives and works in Berlin. History is written by the victors, Menner examines the notion of re-framing history. In this work, Menner places an image of Jihadist movements alongside western propaganda. By reducing his collage images with a copper gouache, the visual noise is minimized. Menner’s deduction of the image then allows a focus on the respective narratives being propagated.
The placement of two seemingly contradictory political ideologies alongside one another, opens the possibility to showcase their similarities. Neither glorifying nor demonizing, it begs the question – who is the saint or sinner?
