Gabriel Reese, better known as Gabriel Specter, is a Canadian-American contemporary artist who works in a variety of media including murals, paintings, prints, and installations. He is widely known for his unique hand-painted pieces that span the globe from Latin America, through London and Paris to Moscow. works can be found on their collaboration with URBAN NATION on Project M/7 in 2015.
Born and raised in Canada, Specter became obsessed with the underground graffiti scene. In the mid-90s, he received a grant to pursue his art in New York City, where he still resides and works as an artist.
The significant subjects in Specter’s explorations are the marginalised aspects of the world’s population such as immigrants, the homelessness and matters with gentrification. His murals and installations invigorate uninhibited and sometimes derelict spaces, scouring the city for objects, various markings, and spaces that have share stories, preferring to be influenced by the surroundings, allowing the space to speak of the layout and focus of the art, as opposed to searching for the perfect spot.
