The Wa is a French visual artist based in Berlin, whose practice is intrinsically linked with the urban environment. Engaging in a distinct visual language, his works are relatable, multi-lingual and often comic in their execution. Most of his pieces have their own clear voice; while others require contextualization
to peel off the layers of meaning and become accessible.
In this work he subversively plays into the stereotypes of the western gaze. Challenging the appropriation of images, he encourages an empathetic skepticism towards societal control and comment. The Wa not only opens up a dialogue with communities worldwide, but also questions its own role and that of art in public space.
His work “FIGURE OF SPEECH” is on display in the current exhibition “Talking…& Other Banana Skins“.
