VERA KOCHUBEY is a German painter, performance artist and fashion designer, living and working in Berlin. Within the scope of her work, she uses spiritual calligraffiti as a distinct writing style.
Born in the USSR, VERA KOCHUBEY is strongly influenced by American and Soviet art. Seeking creative liberation, she found colourful joy and visual escape from the disciplined and brutal grey reality of Moscow in the bright POP art of 1980s New York. Queer culture and camp have always appealed to her and have strongly influenced her art and design as a personal escape from the dogmatic and oppressive Soviet past. Considering herself a highly spiritual person, her performative pieces of art absorb, explore and question the value of freedom of speech.
Her conceptual painting “FREEDOM”, created in the early days of the war in Ukraine, addresses the universal urge to be free from political games and anti-human narratives. This work can be seen in the current exhibition “Talking…& Other Banana Skins“.
