Biography / Oana Maria Pop

Oana Maria Pop (b. 1989) is a Romanian mixed media artist working with oil and acrylic on canvas, industrial silicone and photography. Her practice entails depictions of the neighbourhoods she grew up in and other environs that made an impression on her. The protagonist within the spaces she documents is the human form and its marks left by particular extrinsic experiences. In the past few years, Oana’s work centred around the study of the representation of women in arts and society and the criticism of upholding rape myths, domestic violence and other forms of abuse against women and young girls.

About the project

For Fresh A.I.R., Oana is analysing the written use of language when reporting on abuse against women in Berlin and how the vocabulary of those with social and institutional power becomes the language of consequence. By means of interviews, the artist researches the aspects of safety for women in the city and the effects media terminology has on them.

COMMUNITY WALL: WORKSHOP WITH OANA MARIA POP AND ZUZANNA ODOLCZYK
Anyone passing by Sandstraße 64 is greeted by a cheerful and colorful forest. On September 27 and 28, 2023, around 20 children between the ages of 4 and 6, under the guidance of artists Oana Maria Pop and Zuzanna Odolczyk, created a tunnel wall that brightens the day of every passerby. Both artists, who hail from Romania and Poland, are currently living and working in Berlin for a year as fellows of the Fresh A.I.R. residency program #8.

Fresh A.I.R. #8 | LINGUISTIC XPEDITION
On October 27, 2023, we celebrate the opening of our exhibition of the Fresh A.I.R. scholars. Twelve artists from eight European countries have dedicated themselves for ten months to this year's theme LINGUISTIC XPEDITION. They investigated the act of speaking as a constitutive element of human perception and communication. The artistic exploration ranges from aspects of everyday language use, verbal language actions, language thinking and language action to the structural power of language.
