Biography / Chris Berens

In his art, Chris Berens blends classical themes with childlike, naïve or disturbing scenes. He illuminates them in the same diffuse light that is known from the paintings of the Dutch masters of the 17th century. In 2005 he had his first solo exhibition in Amsterdam, soon followed by shows and projects in museums and galleries around the world. Chris Berens completed his degree in illustration in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 1999. Through his pictures he allows the viewer to take a look into his inner universe. There he creates surreal landscapes inhabited by mysterious human figures and wondrous animal creatures. Each of Berens’ works consists of hundreds of translucent rectangular fragments layered on top of each other on a wooden board, forming a perfectly balanced, luminous puzzle. In 2010, the artist designed the cover for the Blondie album “Panic of Girls”. So far three books about him and his oeuvre have been published.
