Biography / Marjolein Guldentops

Marjolein Guldentops (Belgium, 1994) is a visual artist, author, and performer. Her artistic practice spans various mediums, including text, video and performance. Rooted in the concept of worlding, her work explores the urban rhythms, flows, and semantics that shape perceptions of space and language in both physical and metaphysical senses.

In her daily practice of writing and walking, she distils information from her surroundings, trying to uncover the intricacies of textual experience. Seamlessly blending graphic and typographic elements, spatial compositions, and song-like sequences, she moves between different linguistic systems to convey multiple meanings through the ambiguity and conventionality of language.

In her creative process, she repurposes and re-contextualizes elements of corporate culture, such as desk settings, stationery objects, corporate work wear, and administrative codes, to question traditional notions of their functionality and significance. By challenging understanding of ourselves and our environment, she aims to examine broader social and cultural issues.

About the project

from being to doing” is a project that delves into the complexities of human existence and our interactions with the world. Through a collection of hand-drawn short sentences, the artist encourages us to contemplate the relationship between our modes of being and our actions. By using language and manipulating linguistic conventions, the project unravels the underlying meanings and connotations of seemingly straightforward phrases. “from being to doing” invites us to reconsider the very nature of meaning and to explore how our perceptions and comprehension of the world can be influenced by our language use.

Fresh A.I.R. #8 | LINGUISTIC XPEDITION
On October 27, 2023, we celebrate the opening of our exhibition of the Fresh A.I.R. scholars. Twelve artists from eight European countries have dedicated themselves for ten months to this year's theme LINGUISTIC XPEDITION. They investigated the act of speaking as a constitutive element of human perception and communication. The artistic exploration ranges from aspects of everyday language use, verbal language actions, language thinking and language action to the structural power of language.
