Biography / Sarah Schmidtlein

Sarah Schmidtlein was born in 1986 in Mönchengladbach, Germany. She studied art at HBK Braunschweig and graduated with honors in 2021. She has received numerous awards and grants, including the Deutschlandstipendium, funding from the Kunstfonds Foundation, and the Art Prize for Female Artists from Zontaclub Goslar. She exhibits her work regularly, most recently at venues such as konnektor Hannover and Thomas Rehbein Galerie in Cologne. With the intention of tapping into the social potential of art, she integrates her artistic practice with workshops and projects in public spaces.

About the project

Through her installations, the multidisciplinary artist Sarah Schmidtlein intricately weaves detailed and richly textured whimsical and fantastical worlds from an array of materials, with a special affinity for the discarded. She holds a particular love for the seemingly worthless, finding enchantment in the ability to express oneself using what is at hand or collected. The scenarios she creates always prompt questions about the differences and similarities to our current reality. They inquire about the people, the society that would inhabit them, and whether we can recognize ourselves within them. In doing so, the essence of being human is interrogated. The artist aims to spark contemplation and dialogue about the human condition and our relationship to what makes us human. Her installations serve as portals to alternate realities, inviting viewers to explore their own beliefs, values, and place within the larger context of existence.
