Jivan van der Ende (1993, Netherlands) is a multi-disciplinary visual artist. Her artistic practice consists of performances, installations and print work. An important subject within Jivan van der Ende’s work is the way we look at bodies and its social and political implications. She studied Fine Arts at KASK in Ghent and HISK from 2022-2023 in Belgium. She was an artist in residence at M Leuven and Frans Masereel Centrum before coming to Fresh A.I.R. Her work has been shown in Belgium at LLS Paleis, Lichtekooi Artspace, Galeria Jaqueline Martins (Martins & Montero), Playground Festival, M Leuven, SB34, WIELS Art Book Fair, C-Mine and others. And internationally at P////AKT (Amsterdam), einBuch.haus (Berlin) and the Ulay Foundation (Ljubljana).
About the project
In her project High Visibility, Jivan van der Ende researches expression of gender identity, objectification and commodification of the working body in capitalist, patriarchal society. Through collaboration, cross dressing and the exploration of the camp side of things, she discusses the way we look at bodies with pro-wrestlers and the ‘workie’ community, a queer fetish community that is dedicated to the workwear uniform and its wearers. During her residency at Fresh A.I.R. in Berlin, she translates her research into the creation of costumes, performative actions, and video work.
Artist statement:
“In my practice, mostly consisting of performances and installations, I analyse and dissect the symbols of power structures and social constructions. How are (and were) combinations of colour, material and texture associated with these symbols? By questioning their power status, I am decontextualizing their imposed meanings and leaving space to imagine.
My eclectic method is based on endlessly collecting, documenting, combining, re-using and (re)searching. Therefore, my work entails a practice rather than a production of things. The work is not a static artifact but is formed by different conditions: performers, visitors, architectural conditions (and/or costumes) coming together at a specific moment in time. I aim for an intimate encounter between work and visitor, in which their own intention often influences the meaning of the work. The exhibition space thus becomes a playful platform where it’s possible to both label the experiment as ‘a work’ (and accept the inherent risks) as well as understanding the expectations of a physical and participative audience.”
