Lena Becerra (b. 1994) is an Italo-argentinian artist working across multiple mediums. Her surgically arranged ecosystems summon contemplation of alternative forms of social fabric in gestational stage, where the sinister and sublime converge as part of a cyclical call for rebirth. Currently, her practice revolves around poetical approaches to the social web, particularly the exploration of the sensitive layers of xenofeminism. Lena studied a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts at the National University of La Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina and specialized in New Media, Installations and Sculpture studies at Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo shows across Italy, Argentina, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Australia.
About the project
Artist statement: “Weaving black nests under the skin is a philosophical exploration of inter-beings, arthropod-like organisms, and their embryonic fluctuations. Merging scientific inquiry with hybridization, this work questions the illusion of separateness, embracing cyclicality. Within nature, this conceptual coordinate exists in the gestational form of organisms and, on the other end of the spectrum, in the rotting stages of biological matter. Prosthetic beings suspended in jars of formaldehyde blur boundaries between biological inevitability and speculative potential. By imagining new kin makings with the oddkin* I seek to inspire – at least for a while – alternative worldviews in which linear narratives of life, progress and death can be replaced by ones of hybrid cyclical existence.”
* Making ‘Oddkin’ is a neologism coined by scientist and author Donna Haraway to describe humanity’s need to connect across species in unexpected collaborations and combinations with non-human beings in order to ensure the survival of life on our planet.
