Mariana Carranza (Uruguay/Germany) is a media and digital artist with a multidisciplinary background. She studied architecture at the University of Montevideo. Supported by international scholarships, she expanded her artistic education in Latin America, the USA, Spain, and Germany.
An early involvement in dance and choreography shaped Mariana’s sense of space and time, as well as her awareness of embodiment and somatic processes—elements that continue to inform her artistic practice. Since 1988, she has been working with new technologies, video production, digital media, and creative programming. She is a co-founder and collaborator of various dance, art, and cultural collectives and labs.
Initially working in design and architecture, Mariana Carranza developed her personal artistic language through exhibitions, installations, and performances. Grants and awards allowed her to travel throughout the Americas and Europe, residing in Spain until 1995. She is currently based in Germany. Her work and research focus on creating interactive spaces and full-body interfaces, merging image and sound, poetry and technology; encouraging participation and co-creation while aiming to arouse awareness through embodiment.
She has lectured at universities in Brazil and Uruguay, collaborated with art schools in Sweden, France, and Germany, and participated in curatorial projects. Her work is regularly exhibited in individual and collective shows across the Americas and Europe, earning international recognition, artist residencies, and awards.
About the project
Artist statement: “Through the Looking Glass… Over time, my work has increasingly focused on creating full-body interactive interfaces and exploring the somatic and embodied dimensions of these interactions—unleashing processes, shifting paradigms, and spreading the seeds of new possible worlds.
Now, it is time for me to weave my research and artistic explorations into a more complex narrative—an infinite game. I envision interlacing them into a unique fabric of parallel narratives, guided by the Ariadne’s thread that will shape my work during the residency. The proposed artwork will construct an environment where visitors actively shape the dramaturgy by immersing themselves in an interactive game. Transcending boundaries, they will generate new imaginary and unpredictable worlds—simply by observing the work. Their mere presence creates the narrative. Like Alice stepping through the looking glass, their actions—or even their inaction—will define the unfolding story.”
