“This mural explores the theme of constructing and deconstructing perceptions, drawing inspiration from the interplay between urban landscapes and natural ecosystems. It envisions a future free from prejudice, aiming to dismantle misconceptions and build new ideals.
Fungi often suffer from negative associations and misunderstandings, seen as mere decay agents rather than vital contributors to life. This piece seeks to transform these misconceptions, portraying fungi with the respect and recognition they deserve. It highlights their symbiotic relationships, in this case particularly with the strawberry plant, a familiar and iconic presence in the German landscape. It depicts the connection between strawberries and the fungus Laccaria bicolor (Zweifarbiger Lacktrichterling in German), which is commonly found in the woods and frequently used in agriculture. Through their mycorrhizal networks, fungi facilitate communication, provide nourishment, and even influence the flavor of strawberries, demonstrating their integral role in the ecosystem.
By reimagining our relationship with the natural world, we inspire us to construct a more interconnected and sustainable future”, explains Rommy Gonzales.
