Recap: ONE WALL 2018

- ONE WALL 2018
- March 13, 2019
One building, one wall, one artist – the ONE WALL project continues to take the spotlight in which urban contemporary art currently stands and focus it on the areas from which it comes: on the districts and neighbourhoods. ONE WALL is an attempt to promote a direct exchange among the residents of Berlin, among neighbours, and among cultures, to bring people together through art.
Mostly far from trendy neighbourhoods of the Berlin scene, the ONE WALLS dominate spaces and often focus on specific challenges and problems of that corner of the city. Over a period of ten days, the work grows on the facade – the ONE WALL – while the artists actively seek discussions with the local people, inform them about their work, and also give the people an opportunity to speak.
“The project is designed to reshoot focus of one artwork at the time and take time to develop the artists process and integrate the art naturally in the environment or the neighborhood – we are too fast we need to preserve the creative process.”, says Urban Nation curator Yasha Young
In past years, UN has realised over 35 ONE WALLS in Berlin, together with artists from around the world. Nine uniquely designed ONE WALLS alone in 2018!
EPIC ONE WALL BY FRANCISCO BOSOLETTI & YOUNG JARUS
The start of the ONE WALL year 2018 was indeed epic! Because as a template for their artwork the Italian artist Bosoletti and the Canadian artists Jarus choosed a tragic love story from antiquity. After countless phone calls and weeks of preparation, the two artists went to a dizzying height to create the widely visible artwork in the Wassertorstraß 65. The representation of Daphne & Apollo alone is already a guarantee for countless exclamations of enthusiasm and is lifted to the next level, because of the inverting Technology used by Bosoletti for his Daphne […]
ONE WALL BY TELMO MIEL & JAMES BULLOUGH
May was all about the URBAN NATION UNITY PROJECT! Eight internationally known Street & Urban Art artists followed the appeal of UN Director Yasha Young and came to Berlin. Working together or solo, the artists painted and sprayed five house walls scattered throughout the city within one week, transforming them into unique works of art. The ONE WALL at Bernburgerstraße 35 is the result of a collaboration between Berlin-based street artist James Bullough and Dutch artist duo Telmo Miel. […]
The Italian artist has already immortalized himself throughout the world with numerous murals. In the course of the UNITY PROJECT, Millo designed a huge façade on Luckauer Straße 12. The ONE WALL titled “My head is a jungle” shows the characteristic, childlike figures of the art by Millo. […]
The two Swiss artists behind the duo Nevercrew address the everyday intolerance and disharmony with their ONE WALL “Reification”. The two whales on the house in Zillestraße 29 symbolize two characters with different interests, which are already spatially separated and increasingly separated, rather than approaching each other. […]
Not far from the Görlitzer Park, the graffiti artist Elle has immortalized herself in the course of the UNITY PROJECT with her own ONE WALL. The mural entitled “We are many, but allways one” shows women from different historical eras and can certainly be understood as a contribution to the # MeToo debate. The collage-like masterpiece can be found in Wienerstraße 42. […]
ONE WALL BY SNIK & NUNO VIEGAS
What happens when the two stencil masters of the artist duo Snik meet the Portuguese Street Artists Nuno? Only good! The best proof is the jointly crafted ONE WALL by the three artists in Ostseestraße 18. Stencil by stencil, the female motif of Snik was sprayed onto the black facade and crowned in the true sense of the word at the end by Nuno with all due respect. […]
ONE WALL ON THE FACADE OF THE URBAN NATION MUSEUM BY SUPER A
The motifs on the outer facade of the URBAN NATION Museum are of particular importance, because they are a kind of figurehead and the first thing that visitors get to see from URBAN NATION. This year, two artists were allowed to paint the facade in their individual style. The Dutch artist Super A chosed a motif with a very critical symbolism that represents the struggle between progressive individuals and conservative elements that determine what is right and what is not. […]
For a long time, the facade of Bülowstraße 101, directly opposite the museum, has provided a view of the infinite depths of a galaxy. Just in time for the opening of the new exhibition “UN-DERSTAND The Power of Art as a Social Architect” curated by Yasha Young, Dutch artist Mr. June created an additional dimension. His 3D artwork shows the change in the art world brought about by digitalisation and thus also provides a peek into the future of URBAN NATION. […]
ONE WALL ON THE FACADE OF THE URBAN NATION MUSEUM BY SNIK
The British artist duo Snik was a frequent and welcome guest of URBAN NATION this year. In addition to the joint ONE WALL with Nuno Viegas, the two Britons also belonged to the first year of the Artist in Residence Programme of URBAN NATION and were invited to create a new art work on the the facade of the museum during the new exhibition “UN-DERSTAND the power of art as a social architect”. They describe their latest facade work as an homage to Mother Nature, but also as a warning signal and call that the current environmental pollution, exploitation of resources and destruction of habitats is no longer acceptable. In the spirit of URBAN NATION’s “Connect” approach, Snik spontaneously brought Hera from the artist duo Herakut on board to design the new facade together. […]
A DIFFERENT KIND OF ONE WALLS – LOLLAPALOOZA 2018
By definition, no real ONE WALLS, but absolutely worth mentioning. After all, when does an artist ever have the opportunity to give a creative stamp to an entire stadion or historical landmark of the city? Therefore, the walls of Ludo, Sandra Chevrier and How Nowsm, which were created during URBAN NATION X LOLLAPALOOZA 2018 are listed here. All three artists have visualized a song by a well-known band in their works […]
